Jim Flanigan's 639 page commentary on the Psalms is a tremendouslyhelpful commentary both from an expository and a devotional angle.

While Spurgeon's Treasury of Davidis enjoyable, thought provoking and richly devotional, it lacksexplanatory depth. W.S. Plumer's mammoth work contains much more by wayof explanation, but being from the Reformed camp entirely misses themillennial references in the Psalms, of which there are many.

Suffice to say that Jim Flanigan has produced a well-balanced, richand thoroughly spiritual work on the Psalms that will stand the test oftime. If you want to know the difference between a Michtam and aMaschil Psalm, look no further. All the titles are fully explained,along with the Psalter's alphabetical features, its Messianicprophecies and its five major divisions. The person of our Lord Jesusis honoured and magnified throughout and Israel's true place in historyand prophecy is carefully guarded.

According to the bibliography, Jim Flanigan consulted well over 40commentaries on the Psalms while researching for this commentary andfrequently gives numerous views of a passage before suggesting whichone he thinks is to be preferred. The wide range of comment is mosthelpful (especially to readers who do not have 45 commentaries onthe Psalms their libraries!).

Each Psalm receives several pages of comment (even the short ones)as well as being helpfully divided up and given headings (Mr Flaniganrarely uses alliteration). All in all this handsome hardback commentarywill prove a wise investment for any lover of scripture.
